Fiction: Creating Story
Instructor: Dan OliverioTuesdays 10 A.M. – 12 P.M. April 21 - June 2, 2026
Part of being human is making up stories. We tell fairy tales to delight children, we read novels to lose ourselves in other lives, we watch movies and television to find friends on the other side of a screen. In this class you’ll explore the art of writing fiction by focusing on a specific element each week: character, plot, setting, point of view, and theme. You’ll have the option of writing a new story each week or using the feedback you receive to polish one story until it shines. The writing prompts change each term, so students can repeat the course and always find something new.
No In-Person Class on May 19.

Weekly writing prompts and class discussion of required reading assignments will guide you through the topics we’ll explore, which include narrative voice, character transformation, and non-linear story structure.

Shakespeare in a time of Resistance
Instructor: Jake BroderWednesdays 10 – 12 P.M. April 29 - June 10, 2026
This class will explore plays such as Hamlet and Julius Caesar, in order to consider the modern relevance of the social dynamics enumerated in these plays. The form of the work will be 'table work' - which means that we'll be sitting round a table together, reading the play aloud and considering passages and discussing them together. No previous experience necessary. We'll break everything down as we go. Students will be encouraged to both play the parts and share their thoughts in a robust way, in an environment that is collegial, open and accepting of any point of view. We're doing this in order to see that Shakespeare has written about the dynamics in society and is asking questions that we are still asking. We're not going to find answers, but there is much wisdom to be gleaned in the discovery of 'rhyming across time'.
No In-person class on May 20.
