Matthias Pintscher returns to lead LACO in a program that traces a compelling arc from darkness to light across three centuries and three distinct musical worlds. He opens with Haydn‘s Symphony No. 44, “Trauer” (“Mourning”), a work of unusual weight for its time, whose solemn slow movement was, according to legend, requested for the composer’s own funeral. That spirit of introspection deepens in the Wallis debut of Kayhan Kalhor, performing Blue as the Turquoise Night of Neyshabur on the kamancheh (the traditional Persian spiked fiddle), drawing on centuries of Persian classical tradition to create music that feels both ancient and immediate. The program closes with Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, the “Linz,” famously composed in four days and brimming with energy, wit, and effortless grace — a radiant, joyful counterpoint to the depth that preceded it.
An evening that ends in light, without ever forgetting the shadows where it began.
