Passing the Crown is a groundbreaking celebration of the queens of hip-hop, bringing together Olympic-level B-girls, orchestral musicians, MCs, and DJs in a genre-defying performance that moves fluidly between concert, dance battle, and cultural tribute. Premiered at Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City Festival, the production honors the creativity, influence, and resilience of women across generations, from Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, and Ms. Lauryn Hill, to Rapsody and Doechii. Through cinematic orchestration and street dance vocabularies, it reimagines the hip-hop canon through the lens of female and gender-expansive artistry.
This is more than a performance. It’s a powerful declaration that uplifts the royalty, resilience, and artistry of Hip-Hop's Queens.
Passing The Crown was originally commissioned for Lincoln Center's 2024 Summer for the City festival, with a return to the 2025/26 season headlined by MC Lyte, with appearances by Rapsody, and DJ Perly. Passing The Crown is conceived and led by Juliette Jones, in collaboration with Randi "Rascal" Freitas, and Monique Brooks Roberts.
