LACO presents a program spanning a century of music from Spain, Brazil, and Argentina that explores the dynamic exchange between folk tradition and modernist innovation. Principal winds take center stage in Oscar Navarro’s cinematic Juego de Ladrones (Game of Thieves), a theatrical work full of quick shifts and witty interplay. Principal Flutist Benjamin Smolen follows with Piazzolla’s Tango Étude No. 3, distilling the sensual tension and rhythmic freedom at the heart of tango. LACO’s string quartet performs Ginastera’s landmark String Quartet No. 1, which channels the fierce rhythmic drive of Argentine folk traditions into a propulsive modernist language. The program also includes Tania León’s luminous Alma and Villa-Lobos’ poetic Improviso No. 7, completing a journey through the musical landscapes of the Americas.
Join us for an afternoon where folk memory and modernist daring speak with equal urgency.
