Pianist Suzana Bartal returns to The Wallis with the Calder Quartet for a beautiful program of string quartets and piano quintets. The evening begins with a pair of string quartets: one composed in 1782 by the father of the string quartet, Joseph Haydn, and the other created more than 200 years later by Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga. Also on the program are piano quintets by Robert Schumann and Eric Tanguy. Schumann's only Piano Quintet, in four movements, composed in an enthusiastic outpour of only five days in 1842, remains a major work of nineteenth-century chamber music, a work that revolutionized the instrumentation for piano and strings and established the piano quintet as a quintessentially Romantic genre. In 2019, almost 180 years later, renowned French composer Eric Tanguy responds to the models of the past with the US Premiere of a stunningly enticing piece in one movement in which the piano and the strings put a virtuosic dialogue on display.
