THE WEST COAST PREMIERE OF
OSVALDO GOLIJOV: FALLING OUT OF TIME
Oct 27, 2022
7:30 PMTEXT ADAPTED BY Osvaldo Golijov
FROM THE NOVEL BY David Grossman
What happens when the natural order of things is upended? Falling Out of Time is a new work from the Grammy Award-winning composer Osvaldo Golijov performed by an ensemble of musicians, including some members of the Silkroad Ensemble, led by violinist Johnny Gandelsman. Rooted in David Grossman’s novel of the same name, this infinitely nuanced story in voices narrates a profound journey of grief and solace, a journey “out of time” as parents grieve the death of a child, a quest to comprehend a loss with no name.

It so happens that we all are, as a world, living in a moment in which the “natural” order of things has been upended. More than ever, we are in need of stories that help us make sense of the broken pieces. Falling Out of Time is one such story.

REVIEWS
"... This extended meditation on loss and grief, is conveyed on a musical fabric that adds jazz, blues and elements of central Asian music to Golijov’s usual stylistic amalgam ... create(s) an allusive patchwork of colours and textures, though these resources are generally used with great restraint. ..." The Guardian
"Osvaldo Golijov’s Falling Out Of Time ... is a masterpiece as intellectually stimulating as it is emotionally gripping. It cracks open how we experience time and how this experience is disrupted by grief and eventually dismantled by death." Classical Post
"‘Falling Out of Time’ Gives Song to a Father’s Grief ... The use of folk idioms — Sephardic, Middle Eastern and something like the blues — made the performance eerily intimate and age-old, like a community’s spirit had been cracked open. The piece provides a wide embrace, one that wrapped around me, too." The New York Times
This performance is made possible in part by generous support from the Consulate General of Israel in Los Angeles.
